After Surgery, R. Kelly Misses Court Date

r kellyKelly, whose real name is Robert Kelly, has pleaded not guilty to 14 counts of child pornography and is awaiting trial. He was charged in 2002 with engaging in videotaped sex acts with an underage girl.

R. Kelly missed a Chicago court appearance on child pornography charges yesterday (Feb. 7) after undergoing surgery for a burst appendix, his lawyer said.

Attorney Terence Gillespie said the 40-year-old R&B singer underwent surgery Sunday, shortly after being admitted to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. Gillespie said Kelly was in good condition and was expected to be released from the hospital later today.

In December, a Cook County judge issued a ruling that allowed Kelly to travel out of state for business purposes without permission. Kelly was in Miami to perform at a Super Bowl party over the weekend.

Kelly’s next court date is Feb. 21, and Gillespie said he expected the artist to be there.

uestlove On New Album, Al Green Gets Funky With ?

Al GreenAl Green is at work on his next Blue Note studio album with the Roots’ Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson in the producer’s chair. The as-yet-untitled disc has been in the works for two years already, but Thompson tells Billboard.com he is hoping to finish it up in September.

The pairing came to fruition after Thompson “ran my big mouth” and told [Blue Note senior director of A&R] Eli [Wolf], “‘Yo, man. You want a real Al Green record? Come see me.’ So now I’ve got to live up to that.”

Thompson admits he has a very specific sound in mind for the follow-up to Green’s 2005 album “Everything’s O.K.,” and that he has met with some resistance about seeing it through. “If it were up to me and it was absolutely totalitarianism, I would live all my derivative fantasies out on this record,” he says. “It would be 1974 all over again, sonically. I think they’re still getting used to that.”

One of the difficulties, according to Thompson, is that veteran artists see their peers reaping commercial rewards by pairing with young, hot talent and have trouble resisting the urge to jump on that bandwagon.

“If you’re going to compete with T.I., Chamillionaire and Jay-Z, then by all means, let’s try and reach the kids of today,” he says. “But if you put the dart in your hand and you’re not going to hit a bullseye, you’re better off just doing what you know best.”

“I’m not saying Al Green wants to do his version of [Chamillionaire’s] ‘Ridin’,’ but for veterans, their examples are the Santana of 1999 and the Tony Bennett and Rod Stewart of today,” he continues. “They’re thinking, ‘Okay, that is going to get me to the Grammy podium. Someone phone up John [Legend], Alicia [Keys] and Corinne [Bailey Rae] and let’s get on Adult Contemporary radio.’ I’m trying to get them out of that mode. It’ll be a struggle but I think at the end of the day it will be a quality record.”

Green recently enjoyed his highest-charting album on The Billboard 200 since 1975 when “The Definitive Greatest Hits” debuted at No. 46. He has a handful of live performances on tap in the coming months, beginning April 29 at the Tobago Jazz Fest.

Beyonce Get No. 1 for Ten Week With ‘Irreplaceable’

BeyonceBeyonce makes it 10 weeks straight atop the Billboard Hot 100 with “Irreplaceable,” but faces another strong competitor for the throne in Nelly Furtado’s “Say It Right” which climbs one spot to a new peak of No. 2. The latter cut is No. 1 on the Pop 100 for a second week.

For a third week, Fall Out Boy’s “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race” tops the Hot Digital Songs chart but slips 2-3 on the Hot 100. Daughtry’s “It’s Not Over” holds tight at No. 4 for a second week while Gwen Stefani’s “The Sweet Escape” featuring Akon scores a new peak, moving 6-5.

Back on the the Hot 100, Akon’s “I Wanna Love You” featuring Snoop Dogg slips 5-7, while Jim Jones’ “We Fly High” keeps No. 8 warm for a second week. Lloyd’s “You” featuring Lil’ Wayne enters the top tier 11-9 and also ascends 2-1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs tally.

After 22 weeks on the chart, Unk’s “Walk It Out” rockets 17-10 on the Hot 100, the longest climb by an R&B/hip-hop track into the top 10 since Petey Pablo’s 22-week trek with “Freek-A-Leek” in May 2004.

“Cupid’s Chokehold” by alternative hip-hoppers Gym Class Heroes featuring Patrick Stump is this week’s greatest digital sales gainer, as it moves 28-15 with the help of a 70,500 downloads. This week’s greatest airplay gainer is Mims’ “This Is Why I’m Hot”, which heats up 72-59.

Bowing at No. 40, the Jonas Brothers’ “Year 3000″ is the chart’s top debut. The track comes from the young group’s debut “It’s About Time,” released last August. After landing at No. 2 yesterday (Feb. 7) with her self-titled RCA debut, Katharine McPhee opens at No. 48 on the Hot 100 with “Over It.” Modest Mouse is also new at No. 59 with “Dashboard.”
